ARW Blogging Assignment 6

The most useful approach to use in critically analyzing The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemmingway is Santiago as a Christ Figure. The Old Man and the Sea contains symbols of the Bible. First, The old man was on the sea for three days. This represents Christ's three days of crucifixion. Secondly, Santiago ate raw fish in the text, and this represents the special crime of Christ. Finally, the old man was hurt his hands, and this imply the wounds in Christ's hands.

ARW Blogging Assingment5

The main characters in Old Man and the Sea are Santiago, a fisherman and Manolin, a boy who helps him.

Three adjectives that describe Santiago are old, calm and hopefull.

At first, Sntiago is old. This is very important in the text and he is very strong altought he is old. Secondly, Santiago is calm. This is expalined " They sat on the terrace and many of fishermen made fun of the old man and he was not angry " (page 11, line 6 ) He can ignore the blame of the outside and do what he really want to do. He really loves the boy and fish, and be interested in only them. So he does not lose his calmness. Finally, Santiago is hopefull. This is expalined " But they went through this fiction every day. " ( page 16, line 14 )He and the boy try to make their life fan and find hope. And they believe that someday the old man can catch a big fish.

Three adjectives that describe Manolin are young, faiyhfull and diligent.

At first, Manolin is young. This is very important because this oppose to the old man. Secondly, Manolin is faithful. This is explained "Why am I so thoughtless? I must get him another shirt and jacket for the winter and some sort of shoes and another blanket. " ( page 21, line 8) Finally, He is dilligent. Thos is explained "It is what a man must do. " (page 26, line 18 ) He is young but he know the responsibility of fishermen.

How do "good" college teachers present information? (ARW homework)
According to Meiland, a "good" college teacher presents information in the following way.In general, they present in the sense of ''what is currently believed''. But it is not enough to make good students. The college students must have critical examination and evaluation after understanding material.I agree with this opinion because there is no absolute thinking and student must have critical thinking. Firstly, for example, when people believed that many people believe something with no reason or a bad reason, student must examine what they believe and try to find out the truth. Examining belief is to have a good reason and a rational basis. And a good reason and a rational basis on belief will make belief longer. So I think that college teachers should give information to student with a good reason and a rational basis. Secondly, students must have critical examination and evaluation after understanding material, because there is no absolute thinking and students must have critical tinking. Having critical thinking will help students to have rational reasons on belief. And if students have reasons, belief will be a longer wether it is true or not.So I think teachers must present god reasons and students must have critical thinking.
